Did you know that there's a giant statue of Shaq outside the east gate of Chaoyang Park, the largest park in Beijing? Well, there is.
Dear God in heaven, there is.
The enormous statue was built
because that particular section of the park is sponsored by Li-Ning, the Chinese sportswear company
endorsed by Shaq. (Not to mention fellow NBA uber-stars Chuck Hayes and Damon Jones.) But it would appear that some of the local residents don't appreciate The Big Diesel polluting their playground.
Here's a sampling of the anti-Shaq trashtalk:
Lei Shi: "I walk past him every day and I think, he is just so-so. We're not sure why he's here."
Chen Chen: "In my dreams at night, Shaq is just that tall. Shaq is a good player, but, look here, he is little fat."
Tony Zhang: "Kobe is younger, and that Shaq over there is fatter. Kobe is today. Shaq is too old."
Minghas Li: "One good thing about this. Shaq can't sing in real life, and here he will not be able to sing."
Uh, hey Shaq. How does that Chinese you-know-what taste?
Labels: Beijing, Shaq, statues, trash talk
Shaq >> dumb Chinese on the street.
also, the chinese have a giant optimus prime statue too in their backyard. yes, I'm a transformers nerd *facepalm*
What happened to the Antoine post?
THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!
Back to topic. Chinese people typically love the finesse game and hate Shaq's brute force style of play. Yao Ming, for example, is probably best known for that turnaround jumper.
Coach to players : "Double on Shaq, he's posting"
Players to themselves : "Oooh...sh....let's get the f*ck outta here"
Nope, just the small number of Chinese interviewed who apparently have no knowledge of NBA history. I was waiting for the "Kobe owns Bill Russell" comment to follow. My tongue was firmly in cheek.
Plus, I was channeling a 14 year old video game player. :)
I'm not a huge Shaq fan (well, I do love his preposterous quotes), but fanboy worship of Kobe at Shaq's expense doesn't sit well with me, given the relative accomplishments of the two. Let's just remember what Shaq's numbers used to be like in LA (and remember that his Orlando team was crap without him). Stunning O_o
