Word of the Day: Phi Slamma Jamma

Phi Slamma Jamma (fi slamma jamma) noun. A fictional fraternity for gifted collegiate basketball players, especially those who can leap and dunk.

Usage example: If you go to college, apply yourself, and can dunk like a madman, then you too can pledge Phi Slamma Jamma.

Word Trivia: Phi Slamma Jamma was the nickname given to the
University of Houston's Cougar basketball team from 1982 to 1984. The team was coached by the legendary Guy V. Lewis and included such basketball immortals as Clyde Drexler and Akeem Olajuwon (later "Hakeem"). They were best known for aggressive fast breaks that ended in emphatic dunks (most often punctuated by an announcer screaming "Phi Slamma Jamma!!"). The name was coined by Tommy Bonk, a writer for the Houston Post newspaper.

  1. It's a good phrase. I don't know why it hasn't been used again in the last 20 years.

  2. Hakeem was a great player. He was the 1st overall draft in 1984 and went on to play for the Houston Rockets.
